Climate Change Research on the Tibetan Plateau & Himalayas

The Modern Tibetan Studies Program (MTSP) at Columbia University is committed to engaging the study of contemporary Tibetan and Himalayan societies. Through courses at Columbia, public programming, and research initiatives, MTSP prioritizes the study of climate and social change.

Home of the first Climate School in the nation, Columbia University has established itself as a leader in the field of climate studies. MTSP is partnering with dendrologists and other climate-research scientists at the Climate School’s Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory and colleagues at Indiana University and around the world to earnestly explore these questions. MTSP seeks to provide a platform where indigenous practices and knowledge, modern scientific research, and historical inquiry are in mutual conversation. We seek to collaborate with others to develop open-access databases, analytical tools and other resources; to explore new methodologies and generate data for more fully understanding the impact of climate on human migratory and related patterns over time; and above all to identify local impacts and needs and support those working to find paths to climate resilience.

MTSP offers here a shared and interdisciplinary platform for partnering with other academic initiatives, local communities, non-profit organizations and agencies, as well as field researchers and professionals. Please contact us for more information and to collaborate: [email protected].
