Sonam Tsering Featured in LAC Newsletter

March 25, 2025

Sonam Tsering, who serves as Senior Lecturer in Tibetan, as well as Director of the Tibetan Language Program in the Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures (EALAC) was selected for a feature interview in the February 2025 issue of the “Lecturer Advisory Committee Monthly Newsletter” at Columbia University.

The interview was conducted by Dr. Meredith Landman, Lecturer and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Linguistics, whose advisees have included undergraduate students focusing on Tibetan. William Gore (Class of ’24), for example, wrote a senior thesis on evidential markers in the Amdo Tibetan dialect and earned high honors, working in consultation with Dr. Landman and Sonam Tsering.

Sonam Tsering currently teaches all three levels of Modern Colloquial Tibetan. His colleague Sonam Tsering Ngulphu teaches all three levels of Classical Tibetan. Through the Shared Course Initiative, Tibetan language courses taught at Columbia University are also available (via virtual classroom) to students at Cornell University, Yale University, and Princeton University.

In the interview, Sonam Tsering describes his commitment to developing innovative instructional materials and the core principles that guide his teaching.
